RESILIENCE: The ability to adapt and adjust to change.
Since 2006, Island Housing Trust has worked hard to create 102 homes for year-round Island residents. Every day we demonstrate our resilience and dedication to our core mission to end housing insecurity on Martha’s Vineyard.
We repurpose existing buildings and construct new homes to create pocket neighborhoods. We work to conserve land because people and land are both worth preserving. We use proven green building practices that conserve energy, help our environment and make our homes truly affordable for the average wage earner to heat, cool and maintain. We design our homes thoughtfully and carefully so they will last for generations.
Our homeowners and renters illustrate resilience with their determination to remain on Island building purposeful lives for their families and community. They do meaningful work and volunteer. They own businesses. They fish and farm and educate their kids. They pay mortgages and property taxes and rent and utilities.
Our board, staff, donors, investors and partners remain steadfast and have helped us dream bigger, challenging us to be bold and set ambitious goals. That challenge led to our Vision 2020 goal of creating 100 new homes for 300 Island residents by the end of 2020 and we’re almost there!
With their help, in the past year we created homes for 41 people in Aquinnah, Tisbury and West Tisbury. By this summer 48 more year-round residents will settle into their new IHT homes and we will break ground on 20 new rental apartments for 60 residents in the second half of the year.
We are very grateful to all of our supporters and partners for the opportunity to be of service. Together, we’re making progress towards our mutual goal of creating a more resilient community for all of us who call this wonderful place home.

one of the Island’s many skilled craftspeople recounted to Happy and me a story of how he and his family had lived for a year in an old school bus. I started thinking about the Vineyards’ affordable and workforce housing problems. While 300 families on the housing waiting list may seem like a lot, it also seemed to me that the problem was one we could solve. We still have lots to do, but IHT, with creative new partners, like the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, is really making progress.”
