Dear Friends,
Since our inception and for the past 17 years, IHT has stayed true to our mission to help end housing insecurity on our Island. Without stable, year-round housing we cannot sustain our community. The statistics are grave. The Martha’s Vineyard Commission recently reported that we’re losing year-round rental homes and gaining short term rental properties at an alarming rate. Market rate home ownership and rental prices are both out of reach of working Island families.
Year-round residents are moving away. We all know someone who has left or is planning to. We’re losing veterinarians, dentists, doctors, teachers, firefighters, restaurant staff, bankers, families, elders, and young people who cannot see a way to build or sustain a life here. This exodus of talent, vitality, skill and wisdom is beginning to destabilize our community. But our commitment to making a positive impact on this challenge is unwavering.
We’re making progress. IHT has created 156 permanently affordable homes, both rental and ownership, for working Island families. In 2020, we announced our bold Vision 2025 goal to create 150 additional homes by the end of 2025. We have completed 25 new homes, with 148 new units currently in production.
IHT is currently developing five new neighborhoods in partnership with the Towns of Aquinnah, Edgartown, West Tisbury, and Oak Bluffs including permanent supportive housing for Island veterans and housing dedicated to our senior residents. When these rental and ownership neighborhoods are completed 250 year-round Island residents, and their families, will have stable, affordable, year-round places to call home. We also have acquired a permanent office space to accommodate the increased complexity of our projects and to ensure that our staff and board can continue to honor the promises we’ve made to our community and to each of you.
The hard work of preserving the people who sustain our Island community and local economy is critically important. It begins with stable, affordable housing.
